Habi follows a holacracy model that distributes authority in different circles- teams that are autonomous but interdependent pieces that make up the whole.
The Core Circle is composed of regular Learning Experience Designers (LXDs), and takes care of day-to-day operations of Habi, while smaller Project Circles design, prototype, implement, and evaluate their own projects.
Within circles are Roles, which LXDs fill. Each role has its own intended purpose, domains, and accountabilities, which guide the tasks and day-to-day activities of LXDs. We fill multiple roles.
You might also notice the color codes, these refer to six types of roles. While each project is different (not all roles are present in all projects), all types have to be present in all projects. Here are the different roles and the general purpose of each one:
As mentioned above, as a regular LXD, you will assume roles at the Core and Project Circles. Core Circle roles are essential roles that support day-to-day operations of Habi. Only one LXD holds this role for the entire organization.
In the Core Circle, there are 5 L-circles— Loob, Lusong, Lingon, Labas, and Laro Circles. Each role is in charge of particular domains, processes and activities related to the purpose of their L-circle.
Learn more about the Core roles through the Core Circle Airtable:
Project Roles are basic units that form a project circle. At the start of a project, all members get together to decide what roles each one fills. Learn more about Project Roles by checking the Project Circle Airtable.
Here's a look at what a project circle could look like, after role assignments:
By now you probably know what Project Circles you're in, and what Roles you fill in. Get to know them, but don't get too attached. One key difference about working in Habi is that Roles are fluid--these can adapt based on situations and contexts of a given project. In the middle of implementation you might find yourself needing to trade roles with other team members, and that's fine.
We are a nimble organization: adaptive to change, but clear with our purpose.
Reflect on your own strengths. Examine which activities you enjoy doing. Which of the L's are you strongest at? And which ones do you need more support in? Follow the instructions and add your own self-assessment in the Slides.
This will also be a good exercise to get to know everyone else on the team.
Our unconventional structure won't really work if the people are not, well, great. :)
